Salmon on Ricelands

In one of the largest salmon releases of its kind, the Sacramento River Settlement Contractors and partners from the Bridge Group, in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, released nearly 2 million juvenile salmon into winter-flooded rice fields near the Sacramento River. The effort gives young salmon access to productive floodplain habitat where they can feed and grow before continuing their journey to the Pacific Ocean, with the goal of improving survival and ultimately increasing the number of adult salmon returning to the Sacramento Valley.

Salmon Imprinting Project

The Imprinting Program, a collaboration among the Sacramento River Settlement Contractors, fishermen, farmers and water users in California, puts hatchery juvenile salmon in river water to decrease straying into other waterways. Scientists working on the project hope to answer the lingering question of whether salmon that imprint as juveniles on Sacramento River water will return to the upper river as adults.
